FAQ
Why can't some word pairs be laddered?
Because no chain of real words connects them. Some words are isolated — every one-letter change produces a non-word — so no ladder exists at any length. Rare letters make this more likely.
Who invented word ladders?
Lewis Carroll, who called them doublets and published them in Vanity Fair in 1879. The rules have not changed since: one letter per step, every step a real word.
What length works best?
Four and five letters. Three-letter ladders are trivially short, and words of seven or more letters have too few one-letter neighbours to make interesting chains.
