How it works

- Both a grade-level score and a plain-English ease description are shown.
The formula
Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words). Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59.
FAQ
What is the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level?
A readability formula that estimates the US school grade level needed to understand a passage, based on average sentence length and syllables per word.
How is syllable count estimated?
This uses a vowel-group heuristic (counting clusters of vowels, adjusting for silent endings like a trailing "e") — it's a close approximation, not a dictionary lookup, so it can be off by one on unusual words.
What reading level should I aim for?
General audiences and marketing copy typically target grade 6-8; technical or academic writing often runs grade 12+. Lower grade levels are generally easier and faster to read.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No — word, sentence, and syllable counting all happen locally in your browser as you type.
Does this work for languages other than English?
The Flesch formulas were designed for English text, so running non-English passages through them will still produce a number, but it won't reflect true difficulty since syllable and word-length patterns differ by language.
