How the typing speed test works

  1. Choose a duration and begin typing the displayed passage.
  2. Correct and incorrect characters are highlighted while speed and accuracy update.
  3. When time expires or the passage is complete, review your net WPM, raw WPM, CPM, and error count, check your personal best, and use Copy result to share it.

Net WPM here is based on correctly matched characters: correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ elapsed minutes. Accuracy is correct typed characters ÷ all typed characters × 100. Raw WPM uses all typed characters instead, so the gap between raw and net WPM shows what mistakes cost you. This prevents fast but incorrect keystrokes from inflating the reported speed.

FAQ

How is words per minute calculated?

Correctly typed characters are divided by five to estimate words, then divided by elapsed minutes. Five characters per word is the standard typing-test convention.

How is typing accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the percentage of typed characters that match the passage at the same position. Incorrect characters reduce accuracy immediately.

When does the timer start?

The timer starts with your first typed character, so time spent reading the passage before typing does not reduce your score.

Which test duration should I use?

A 60-second test is a useful general benchmark. Thirty seconds is convenient for practice, while two minutes gives a steadier measure of sustained speed.

What is the difference between net WPM and raw WPM?

Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters (correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes), so mistakes lower it. Raw WPM counts every character in the box (typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes), so it shows pure speed before errors. CPM is correct characters per minute.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is a commonly cited average, and roughly 65 to 70 WPM is often cited as productive for office work. Accuracy matters as much as speed, so aim to raise both together.

Are my results saved or uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. Your best net WPM for each test duration is kept in your browser's local storage on this device so the test can tell you when you beat it. Clear your site data to remove it.
