How to calculate a weighted grade
- Add each assignment, exam, or category and its percentage score.
- Enter how much each item contributes to the course grade.
- Review the weighted percentage, letter estimate, and total weight.
- Optionally, open "Grading scale" to set your school's own A/B/C/D cutoffs, or enter a target grade to see what you need on the rest of the course.
The calculation is Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). For example, scores of 85, 78, and 92 weighted at 30%, 30%, and 40% produce 85.7%. Letter grades default to common US boundaries but can be customized to match your school.
FAQ
How is the weighted grade calculated?
Each score is multiplied by its weight. Those weighted points are added and divided by the total entered weight, so partial course weights are normalized.
Do my weights need to total 100%?
A complete course breakdown normally totals 100%. The calculator can still estimate a grade from partial weights and clearly reports the total entered.
Which letter-grade scale is used?
It defaults to A at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60%, and F below 60% — but you can open "Grading scale" and edit each boundary to match your institution's own cutoffs.
Can I calculate grades by category?
Yes. Enter category averages such as Assignments, Midterm, and Final with their course weights, or enter individually weighted assessments.
What score do I need on my final exam to get an A?
Enter your target overall grade in the "What score do I need on the rest of the course?" section. It uses your already-entered scores and weights to calculate the average you need on the remaining course weight.
Is my grade information saved?
No. Calculation happens in your browser and the entered rows disappear when the page is reloaded.
