How it works
- Paste or use the sample reading passage — the word count updates live as you type.
- Press Start as the reader begins reading aloud.
- Press Stop when finished, log any errors (mispronounced, skipped, or substituted words), and read off both WPM and WCPM.
Timing counts the elapsed seconds from start to stop. Words per minute (WPM) divides the passage's word count by the elapsed minutes. Words correct per minute (WCPM) subtracts the logged errors first — <code class="rounded bg-brand-900/[0.05] px-1 py-0.5 font-mono text-xs">(words − errors) ÷ minutes</code> — which is the oral reading fluency calculation actually used to track reading progress over time.

How is words-per-minute calculated?
The passage's total word count divided by the elapsed reading time in minutes.
What's the difference between WPM and WCPM?
WPM is raw speed — every word counted, mistakes included. WCPM (words correct per minute) subtracts the errors you log, so it's (words − errors) ÷ minutes. WCPM is the measure teachers and reading specialists actually use to track fluency, since a fast but error-filled reading isn't truly fluent.
What counts as an error?
The common categories teachers use: mispronunciations, skipped words, substitutions, and omissions. Log the total count in the Errors field — you don't need to mark which specific words.
