The method
Pot odds express the price you are offered as the share of the final pot your call represents.
required equity = call ÷ (pot + call); with 400 into 1,200 that is 400/1600 = 25%
Nine outs on the flop is roughly 36% to hit by the river, so paying 25% for a 36% chance is profitable — that gap is the entire basis of drawing profitably.
FAQ
What is the rule of four and two?
A quick approximation: multiply outs by four on the flop for your chance by the river, or by two for the next card only. Nine outs is about 36% by the river, which is close enough at the table.
Why calculate against a range rather than a hand?
Because you never know the exact hand. Equity against the set of hands your opponent could hold is the realistic number, and it is often very different from equity against the one hand you fear.
Does this account for implied odds?
No. Implied odds — money you expect to win on later streets when you hit — can justify calls that raw pot odds do not. They are a judgement, not a calculation.
