How it works

How place value works
Every digit's contribution to the number equals the digit multiplied by 10 raised to the power of its column position — ones is 10⁰, tens is 10¹, tenths is 10⁻¹, and so on. Summing every digit's contribution reconstructs the original number, which is exactly what the expanded form shows.
FAQ
How large a number can I enter?
The chart covers place values from the hundred-millions column down to thousandths, so any whole number up to 999,999,999 fits fully, with up to 3 decimal places. Enter something at or above 1,000,000,000 and you'll get a clear "too large" message instead of a chart — rather than silently showing the wrong digits in the wrong columns, which is what earlier versions of this tool did.
What does the expanded form show?
It breaks your number into a sum of each nonzero digit multiplied by its place value — for example, 4,032,715.68 becomes 4,000,000 + 30,000 + 2,000 + 700 + 10 + 5 + 0.6 + 0.08, which is the standard "expanded form" taught in elementary math.
Can I use commas when typing my number?
Yes — commas are stripped automatically before parsing, so "4,032,715.68" and "4032715.68" both work identically.
Can I enter a negative number?
Not currently — the chart covers 0 and above, and a negative sign will show a clear message rather than being silently dropped. Negative place value is a separate topic most place-value charts (including the ones this tool was benchmarked against) don't cover either.
What happens if I type more than 3 decimal places?
Only the first 3 (down to thousandths) are shown on the chart, in the expanded form, and in the word form — all three are kept consistent with each other, so you won't see one describing digits the others don't show.
