FAQ
Why is a number line useful for negatives?
Because it makes the direction of subtraction visible. "Subtract 5 from 2" is an abstract instruction and a movement of five steps left is not, which is why the line survives long after the arithmetic is learned.
Should minor ticks be labelled?
Not once the major intervals are understood. Unlabelled minor ticks force students to count and infer, which is the skill being practised.
How does a fraction number line help?
It shows fractions as positions rather than as pairs of numbers, which is what makes comparing 3/4 and 5/6 intuitive rather than a calculation.
