How to calculate hours between times
- Enter the start and end time.
- Select next day if the period crosses midnight.

The calculation
Each clock time is converted to minutes after midnight: total minutes = hours × 60 + minutes. Elapsed minutes equal end minus start; an overnight period adds 1,440 minutes. Paid minutes equal elapsed minutes minus the unpaid break, and decimal hours equal paid minutes divided by 60.
Example: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 510 minutes. Subtracting a 30-minute break leaves 480 minutes, or 8.00 paid hours.

How do I calculate an overnight shift?
Enter the start and end times, then select "End time is on the next day." The calculator adds 24 hours before finding the difference.
How are break minutes handled?
Break minutes are subtracted from the elapsed time. For example, an 8-hour 30-minute shift with a 30-minute unpaid break produces 8 paid hours.
What are decimal hours?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour. The calculator divides paid minutes by 60, so 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.50 hours.
