What makes a good opening guess?
One with five distinct common letters, weighted toward vowels and frequent consonants. The point of the first guess is information, not a win.
When several candidates remain, which should I pick?
Not necessarily one of them. With three guesses left and five candidates differing in one letter, a non-candidate word that separates them is often the better play.
Is using a solver cheating?
That is between you and your streak. It is also a decent way to learn which letter patterns are common, which improves unaided play.
