Using Exoplanet Habitable Zone Estimator to calculate and analyze your data.
How the Habitable Zone Estimator works
- Enter the star's luminosity in solar units, which is the input the calculation depends on.
- Read both the conservative and optimistic boundaries, since the two differ substantially and the definition is genuinely contested.
- Remember that being in the zone is a statement about the possibility of liquid water, not about habitability.
The method
Habitable zone distance scales with the square root of stellar luminosity, since flux falls with the square of distance.
distance = sqrt(luminosity / flux threshold)
A star at 0.0017 solar luminosity has a zone roughly 4% as far out as the Sun's, which is why M dwarf habitable zones are so tight.
FAQ
What does the habitable zone actually mean?
The range of orbits where a planet with a suitable atmosphere could hold liquid surface water. It says nothing about whether a planet has an atmosphere, water, or a magnetic field — all of which matter more.
Why do the conservative and optimistic zones differ so much?
Because they use different assumptions about atmospheric greenhouse effects and how long a planet can retain water. The boundaries are model-dependent, which is why both are quoted.
Why is tidal locking a problem for M dwarfs?
Because their habitable zones are so close in that tidal forces lock a planet's rotation to its orbit, giving permanent day and night sides. Whether that precludes habitability is an open question.
