11 rooms on a 40x30 grid: a single entrance, two dead-end corridors, one loop connecting the east wing, and a secret passage between rooms 4 and 9.
How the Dungeon Map Generator works
- Pick a size that matches your session length — eleven rooms is roughly one evening of play.
- Choose a style; caverns generate organic shapes, constructed layouts give straight walls and consistent doors.
- Take the layout as a skeleton and add the reasons rooms exist, which is the part no generator can do.
FAQ
What makes a dungeon layout good to play?
Loops and choices. A branching tree forces backtracking down corridors players have already cleared; a loop lets them circle round and keeps pressure on.
How many rooms fit in one session?
Around eight to twelve for a typical evening, fewer if rooms are set pieces. Generating thirty rooms usually produces twenty that get skipped.
Should I use the map exactly as generated?
Use it as a skeleton. A generator gives geometry; the fiction — why these rooms exist and who built them — is what makes it a place rather than a grid.
