The formula

Why does it say "approximate"?
Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year (usually late January to mid-February), so someone born in early January technically belongs to the previous zodiac year. This tool uses the calendar year as a simple approximation rather than the exact lunar calendar date.
What are the zodiac elements?
Alongside the 12 animals, a 5-element cycle (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) repeats every 10 years, so each animal combines with an element across a 60-year full cycle before repeating exactly.
