How it works
- Select a piece belonging to the side whose turn is shown above the board.
- Choose one of its highlighted destinations. Moves that leave your king in check are never offered.
- Pass the device to the other player. The turn, game status, last move, and algebraic move history update automatically.
- Use Undo to take back a move, Flip board to change the viewing side, Copy PGN for the full move record, or Copy FEN for just the current position.
- Your game is saved in this browser as you play, so reloading the page resumes exactly where you left off.
How moves are validated
Each selection is checked against the legal moves available in the current position. The rules engine accounts for occupied squares, captures, pins, check, castling rights, en passant, and promotion before producing the next position. The move history uses standard algebraic notation, such as Nf3 or O-O.
FAQ
Is this chess board for two people on the same device?
Yes. It is a local pass-and-play board for two people sharing one screen. It does not connect you to an online opponent or include a computer player.
Which chess rules does the move validator support?
The validator enforces legal piece movement, check, checkmate, castling, en passant, promotion, stalemate, threefold repetition, insufficient material, and the fifty-move rule.
How do I move a piece?
Select one of the current player's pieces, then select a highlighted destination. You can tap or click squares, or use the arrow keys to focus a square and Enter or Space to select it.
What happens when a pawn reaches the last rank?
A promotion dialog lets you choose a queen, rook, bishop, or knight before the move is completed. The chosen piece is then shown on the board and recorded in the move history.
Is my game saved or sent anywhere?
No. Nothing is ever sent to a server. The current position and move history are kept in this browser's local storage, so refreshing or closing the tab does not lose your game — it resumes automatically next time you open this page on the same device. Starting a new game clears the saved position.
Can I copy just the current position instead of the whole game?
Yes. Copy FEN copies the current position in Forsyth–Edwards Notation, the standard format chess sites and engines use to set up one specific position. Copy PGN copies the full move-by-move record instead.
