What Is a Social Media Safe Zone?

A social media safe zone (also called a safe area) is the part of a vertical video or image that is least likely to be covered by the app's own interface. Every platform draws buttons, captions, sound labels and progress bars on top of your content, so anything important placed under them can be hard to read.

This social media safe zone checker draws an approximate planning guide over your own media, so you can see the recommended area and the areas to keep clear before you publish.

Why Safe Zones Matter for Vertical Content

Vertical formats are viewed full-screen, with the interface layered over the picture. Text that looks fine in your editor can end up behind a caption block, a row of buttons or a header — which hurts readability and can bury a call to action.

Planning with a safe area keeps faces, subtitles, logos, prices and CTAs readable across devices, and makes it easier to repurpose one design for several platforms.

    TikTok Safe Zone

TikTok crowds the bottom of the screen with the username, caption, hashtags and a scrolling sound label, and stacks profile, like, comment, share and save buttons down the right edge. A feed switcher and search sit at the top.

Use the TikTok preset to check the TikTok safe zone: it shows a generous bottom reserve and a right-hand action column. It is an approximate planning guide, not an official specification.

    Instagram Reels Safe Zone

Reels place the account name, caption and audio label along the bottom, with action buttons on the right and header controls at the top. Captions that wrap to several lines can grow upward, so leave extra breathing room.

The Instagram Reels safe zone here is an approximate planning guide — check your Reels text safe area in the app before you post.

    Instagram Stories Safe Zone

Stories show a progress bar and profile header across the top and a reply or share bar along the bottom, while the sides are comparatively open. Stickers and link elements you add yourself also compete for the lower area.

The Instagram Stories preset reserves roughly equal space at the top and bottom, as an approximate planning guide.

Facebook Reels and Stories Safe Zone

Facebook Reels and Facebook Stories are separate placements with different UI coverage, so this checker keeps them as separate presets. Reels stack the page name, caption, audio and a call-to-action along the bottom, while Stories show a progress bar and profile header on top and a reply bar below.

Meta's ad guidance suggests keeping about 14% at the top, about 6% on each side, and about 35% (Reels) or 20% (Stories) at the bottom free of key text and logos. Use these presets as a Facebook safe zone and Meta safe zone planning guide, and as a Facebook video safe area check — they are approximate, and organic layouts can differ.

    YouTube Shorts Safe Zone

YouTube Shorts show the channel name, subscribe button, title and sound at the bottom, with like, dislike, comment, share and remix buttons on the right and search and camera controls at the top.

Use the YouTube Shorts preset to keep text inside the safe zone. As with every platform here, the numbers are approximate planning guidance and layouts can change.

How to Use the Safe Zone Checker

Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP image — or a video, from which the tool extracts one frame locally — then choose a platform. The green outline is the safe area; hatched, tinted bands are the areas to keep clear. Open Customize to tweak the edges, or enable “Safe on all selected platforms” to design for several platforms at once.

When you are done, download an annotated PNG, an overlay-only PNG you can place over a design, or copy a share link that contains only your settings.

Where to Place Text, Logos, and CTAs

    • Keep inside the safe area: important text and subtitles, logos, faces, product names, prices and call-to-action buttons.
    • Avoid placing critical information in the top controls, the right-hand action column or the bottom caption and navigation area.
    • Backgrounds, textures and decorative elements can safely extend to the edge of the frame.
    • This is general design guidance only — the tool does not detect objects or faces in your media.

Platform interfaces change, and every measurement here is an approximate planning guide, not an official specification or a guarantee of visibility, approval or compliance.

How to use the social media safe zone checker

    1. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image — or a short MP4, WebM or MOV clip, from which one frame is extracted locally. Nothing leaves your browser.
    2. Pick TikTok, Instagram Reels, Instagram Stories, Facebook Reels, Facebook Stories or YouTube Shorts — or choose All platforms for the shared area. The green outline marks the recommended planning area and the hatched, tinted bands mark where app buttons and captions usually sit.
    3. Check that faces, text, logos, prices and CTAs sit inside the green outline. Turn on the approximate UI coverage to see generic shapes for the action buttons, caption block and top controls.
    4. Open Customize to adjust the top, bottom, left and right reserves, or switch on “Safe on all selected platforms” to see the area every chosen guide shares.
    5. Download an annotated PNG or an overlay-only PNG, copy the measurements, or copy a share link that stores only your settings.

How the safe area is calculated

Each platform preset stores four reserved edges (top, bottom, left and right) measured in pixels on a 1080 × 1920 reference canvas. The checker scales those reserves to the size of your own media, then subtracts them from the canvas:

Safe width = canvas width − left reserve − right reserve Safe height = canvas height − top reserve − bottom reserve Safe area % = (safe width × safe height) ÷ (canvas width × canvas height) Shared area = the largest reserve on each edge across the selected platforms

All platform values are approximate planning guidance, not official specifications, and app interfaces change. Treat the overlay as a starting point and always preview a draft in the app before you publish.

    FAQ

What is a social media safe zone?

A social media safe zone is the part of a vertical video or image where your key content is least likely to be covered by the app's own interface — profile buttons, captions, sound labels, progress bars and reply fields. Keeping text, logos and faces inside it makes your post easier to read. It is a design guide, not a rule enforced by the platform.

What is the TikTok safe zone?

On TikTok the busiest areas are the bottom (username, caption, hashtags and the sound ticker), the right edge (profile, like, comment, share and save buttons) and the top (feed switcher and search). This tool reserves roughly 130 px at the top, 480 px at the bottom, 60 px on the left and 140 px on the right of a 1080 × 1920 canvas as an approximate planning guide.

What is the Instagram Reels safe area?

Reels place the account name, caption and audio label along the bottom, the action buttons down the right edge and header controls along the top. The Reels preset here is an approximate planning guide that reserves more space at the top and bottom than the edges. Instagram Stories have their own preset, with a header at the top and a reply bar at the bottom.

What is the Facebook Reels and Stories safe zone?

Meta's ad guidance suggests keeping roughly the top 14% and about 6% on each side of a 9:16 canvas clear of key text and logos, plus about 35% at the bottom for Reels or about 20% for Stories, where the caption, audio and call-to-action sit. This tool applies those figures as an approximate planning guide for Facebook Reels and Facebook Stories, as separate presets, and organic layouts can differ.

Where should I place text on vertical videos?

Keep headlines, subtitles, logos, product names, prices and calls to action inside the green safe area, away from the top controls, the right-hand action buttons and the bottom caption block. Background imagery and decorative elements can run to the edges. If you publish to several platforms, switch on “Safe on all selected platforms” and design inside the shared area.

Can I use the same safe zone for all platforms?

You can design inside the most conservative shared area, and this tool will calculate it for you by taking the largest reserve on each edge across the platforms you select. That is a cautious planning area built from these guides — it is not an official cross-platform safe zone, and it can leave more empty space than any single platform needs.

    Are the safe-zone measurements exact?

No. They are approximate planning values rounded from commonly published creator guidance, and platforms change their layouts, fonts and button sizes, sometimes per device or region. The statuses describe placement zones only and do not guarantee that content will be visible, approved or compliant. Always preview a draft in the real app.

    Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image or video frame is decoded and drawn on a canvas inside your browser tab. Exports are generated locally, and the share link contains only your platform and zone settings — never your media.
