FAQ
Why not just stop down the aperture?
Because past a point diffraction softens the whole image, and in macro work the depth of field at any usable aperture is measured in millimetres. Stacking gets depth without the diffraction penalty.
How many frames do I need?
Enough that the in-focus zones overlap. Too few leaves soft bands between frames; too many costs only time. Overlap is what matters, not the count.
Why does the subject look slightly larger in some frames?
Focus breathing — changing focus changes magnification slightly. That is what alignment corrects, and it is why moving the camera on a rail often beats turning the focus ring.
