What contrast does a focus indicator need?
At least 3:1 against adjacent colours under WCAG\
Can I remove the default outline?
Only if you replace it with something at least as visible. Setting outline to none with no replacement is one of the most common accessibility failures on the web, and it makes keyboard navigation impossible.
What about focus-visible?
It applies focus styling only when the browser judges a keyboard was used, so mouse users do not see a ring on click. That is a reasonable pattern, provided keyboard users always get an indicator.
