How the 3D Print Failure Diagnosis works
- Pick the symptom that matches what you are seeing, and when in the print it appears.
- Work through the causes in the order given, which is by likelihood and by how cheap they are to check.
- Change one setting at a time. Changing three and getting a good print teaches you nothing about which one mattered.
FAQ
Why does warping happen?
Uneven cooling. The material contracts as it cools and pulls the corners up, which is why ABS warps far more than PLA and why an enclosure helps. A heated bed and reduced part cooling on the first layers address it.
What causes stringing?
Molten filament oozing during travel moves. Too high a nozzle temperature, insufficient retraction, or wet filament that boils and forces material out. Drying the filament fixes more stringing than people expect.
Why change one setting at a time?
Because changing several and getting a good result tells you nothing about which change worked. Printing is slow enough that a systematic approach is faster than a scattergun one.
