How the Zine Layout Planner works
- Choose the binding format, which determines the imposition entirely.
- Enter total pages — saddle stitch needs a multiple of four, and the planner adds blanks if yours is not.
- Print a test on scrap paper and fold it before running the real stock. Every imposition error is obvious in thirty seconds and invisible on screen.
The method
In a saddle-stitched booklet each sheet carries four pages, and the pairs are determined by counting in from both ends.

For a 16-page booklet the first sheet carries 16 and 1 on one side, 2 and 15 on the other — which is why page order looks wrong until it is folded.
FAQ
Why do pages print out of order?
Because folding rearranges them. A sheet carries pages from opposite ends of the booklet on the same side, so an imposition sheet always looks scrambled and is correct once folded.
Why must saddle stitch use a multiple of four?
Because each sheet produces four pages. A page count that is not a multiple of four leaves blanks, which is fine as long as you decide where they fall rather than letting the imposition decide.
What about the eight-page single sheet zine?
One sheet, folded three times with a single cut in the middle, produces eight pages. The imposition includes upside-down pages, which is correct and confusing until you fold a test.
