What is the relative age effect?
The overrepresentation of players born early in the selection year in youth squads across many sports. Within a bracket, an eleven-month age difference is a large physical and developmental gap, and selection often mistakes it for ability.
Why do cut-off dates differ?
Because they follow school years, calendar years or governing body convention, and those differ by sport and country. A player can be in different brackets in two sports in the same season.
Should a player play up an age group?
Sometimes, and it is a coaching and safety judgement rather than a calculation. Playing up suits some players developmentally and exposes others to a physical mismatch.
