Speed range
A 300 mm blank roughs at roughly 400-600 RPM. Unbalanced, start lower — the vibration from an out-of-round blank at speed can move the lathe across the floor.
How the Woodturning Speed Chart works
- Measure the blank's largest diameter, which is what determines rim speed.
- Start at the low end for roughing, especially with an unbalanced blank, and increase as it becomes round.
- Stand out of the line of the blank when starting a large piece, and never exceed what the lathe and its stand can hold steady.
The method
Rim speed rises with diameter, so a large blank at the same RPM has a much faster-moving surface and far more stored energy.
a common guideline is diameter in inches x RPM between roughly 6,000 and 9,000
A 12 inch blank therefore suggests 500 to 750 RPM, and an unbalanced one should start well below that.
FAQ
Why do large blanks need lower speeds?
Because rim speed and stored energy both rise with diameter. A large piece leaving the lathe at speed carries enough energy to cause serious injury, and an out-of-round blank generates vibration that can shift the machine itself.
Should speed change during a turn?
Yes. Rough at low speed while the blank is out of round, increase as it becomes balanced, and use higher speeds for finishing cuts and sanding where surface finish matters.
What if the lathe vibrates?
Stop and reduce speed. Vibration means the blank is out of balance or the speed is too high for it, and continuing risks the piece coming loose. No finish is worth that.
