What is an overlap fault?
Being out of rotational order relative to adjacent players at the moment the server contacts the ball. Positions are judged relative to neighbours, not to fixed court zones, and only at that instant.
When can players switch?
After the server contacts the ball. Before that, the rotational order must hold. That single instant is what the rule governs, and it is why teams line up oddly and then move immediately.
Which system should a team use?
5-1 with one setter is the most common at competitive level and keeps a consistent setter. 6-2 gives three front-row attackers at the cost of two setters. 4-2 is simpler and common in developing teams.
