How Voice Memo Transcript Timestamps works
- Record a voice memo with your microphone, or upload an existing audio file for playback.
- While recording, your browser's built-in speech recognition adds transcript lines with real elapsed-time timestamps automatically.
- For an uploaded file — or to fix up a recorded transcript — paste or edit timestamped text directly.
- Click any timestamp to jump playback to that moment, search across segments, then copy or download the result as .txt, .srt, or .vtt.
Why uploaded audio needs a pasted transcript
Live speech recognition only has something to listen to while your microphone is recording — it can't retroactively transcribe a file you already have, because the browser API streams from a live audio input, not from a decoded file.
recording → live speech-to-text with timestamps · upload → playback + your own timestamped transcript
Both paths land in the same editable, timestamped segment list, so the export format and workflow are identical either way.
FAQ
Does this transcribe audio files I upload?
No. Browser speech recognition only works on a live microphone stream, so uploaded files get playback and manual or pasted timestamped text instead of automatic transcription.
What format does a pasted transcript need?
One line per segment, written as "MM:SS text" or "[MM:SS] text". A line with no leading timestamp is appended to the previous segment instead of starting a new one.
Does my audio leave my device?
No. Recording, transcription, playback, and export all happen in your browser tab — nothing is uploaded to a server.
Can I edit a segment after it's transcribed?
Yes. Each segment's text is an editable field, so you can correct misheard words without re-recording.
What can I export?
Copy the plain transcript or a timestamped version to your clipboard, or download it as a .txt, .srt subtitle file, or .vtt subtitle file.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. The tool works directly in your browser with no account and no software to install.
