Transition plan
Sprint, wetsuit: T1 target 1:45 — wetsuit to waist while running, glasses in helmet, shoes clipped to bike. T2 target 0:50 — shoes off before the dismount line.
How the Triathlon Transition Planner works
- Choose the distance and conditions, since a cold or wet race changes the kit and the realistic times.
- Lay kit out in the order you will touch it — nothing in transition should require a decision.
- Rehearse the sequence at least twice before race day; transition time is the cheapest time in triathlon to save.
The method
Transition time is pure overhead: seconds saved there cost no fitness at all, unlike the same seconds on the bike or run.
total race time = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run
Cutting a 3:00 T1 to 1:45 saves 75 seconds — more than most age-groupers gain from a season of bike training on a sprint course.
FAQ
What is a realistic transition time?
On a sprint, under two minutes for T1 with a wetsuit and under a minute for T2 is achievable for most age-group athletes. Long-course transitions are legitimately slower because of nutrition and kit.
Should shoes be clipped to the bike?
Only if you have practised the flying mount repeatedly. It saves perhaps ten seconds and costs far more when it goes wrong on race day.
What is most often forgotten?
Race number position, sunglasses, and the mount-line rule for that specific race. Walk the transition area before the start and count your rack position from a fixed landmark, not from neighbouring bikes.

Triathlon Transition Planner treats transitions as the cheapest time on the course — the sequence matters more than the kit list.
