How the TDEE calculator works
- Enter your sex, age, height, and weight, in metric or imperial units.
- Choose the activity level that best matches your typical week.
- Review your BMR, your TDEE (calories burned per day), and how TDEE changes across every activity level.
The formula
BMR (resting calories) is calculated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation:
Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
TDEE then multiplies BMR by an activity factor:
TDEE = BMR × activity multiplier (1.2 to 1.9, depending on activity level)
Example: a 28-year-old man, 175 cm tall, weighing 72 kg, with a light activity level (1.375), has a BMR of about 1,703 kcal and a TDEE of roughly 2,342 kcal/day.
This is an estimate based on population averages — individual metabolism varies. It is not medical advice; consult a professional for personalized guidance.
FAQ
What is TDEE?
TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is the total number of calories your body burns in a day, including your resting metabolism plus everything you do on top of it — walking, exercise, and daily activity.
What formula does this calculator use?
It calculates your BMR (resting calories) with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then multiplies it by an activity multiplier for your selected activity level to get TDEE. Mifflin-St Jeor is the most widely validated resting-metabolic-rate formula for adults and the one most calorie calculators use.
How is TDEE different from BMR?
BMR is the calories your body burns at complete rest, just to stay alive. TDEE adds your activity level on top of that, so it reflects what you actually burn on an average day — the number to use when planning your calorie intake.
How do I use my TDEE number?
Eating around your TDEE roughly maintains your current weight. Eating below it creates a deficit for weight loss; eating above it creates a surplus for weight gain. This calculator reports TDEE only — for a ready-made weight-loss target, use the Calorie Deficit Calculator.
Is my information saved or uploaded anywhere?
No. Every number you enter and the entire calculation stay in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
