The method
Syllables roughly correspond to vowel sounds, so the estimator counts consecutive runs of vowel letters (a, e, i, o, u, y) as syllable candidates, then applies a few common corrections: a silent trailing "e" (like in "make") usually doesn't add a syllable, while a "-le" ending after a consonant (like in "little") usually does.

How accurate is this counter?
It uses a rule-based heuristic — counting vowel-sound groups and adjusting for common patterns like silent trailing "e" and "-le" endings — which gets the vast majority of common English words right. English has many exceptions, though, so an occasional unusual word may be off by one.
