Why is usable volume less than height × width × depth?
The raw multiplication gives the volume of a perfect rectangular box, but real suitcases have rounded corners, a wheel housing, an internal frame, and zippered expansion seams that all eat into that space. A 15% deduction is a reasonable rule of thumb used here to approximate what you can actually pack.
How is "fits as" determined?
It checks your dimensions against the common carry-on limit (22 × 14 × 9 in) and the common linear-dimension checked-bag limit (height + width + depth ≤ 62 in) used by many US airlines — always double-check the specific airline's published limits before you fly, since they vary.
Should I measure the suitcase empty or packed?
Measure the suitcase itself (its outer shell), not what you've packed into it — volume is a property of the bag, and packing efficiency is a separate, much messier variable this tool doesn't try to model.
