How the Skin Undertone Finder works
- Work in natural daylight, on bare skin with no makeup: you will check your wrist veins, gold vs. silver jewellery, pure white vs. cream held to your face, how your skin reacts to sun, your natural eye and hair colour, and the overall cast of your skin.
- Answer each of the six checks, or leave any on “Not sure”. Every answer is weighted — the vein, jewellery, white-vs-cream and skin-cast checks count double — and the tool tallies warm, cool and neutral signals as you go.
- A provisional undertone appears after the first answer and sharpens with each further check, alongside a confidence rating and a breakdown showing which signal pointed which way.
- Consistent disagreement between the signals returns Neutral, which is a real result rather than a failed test. A grey or ashen cast sitting over otherwise warm signals returns Olive.
- Read the guidance for your result — jewellery metals, how foundation shades are labelled, and colours to wear or go easy on — and copy the summary if you want to keep it.
FAQ
What is the difference between undertone and skin tone?
Skin tone is how light or deep your complexion is, and it changes with sun exposure. Undertone is the underlying hue — warm, cool, neutral or olive — and it stays constant. Foundation matching needs both: the tone picks the depth, the undertone picks whether the shade leans golden, pink or neutral.
How do I know if I am warm or cool toned?
The quickest signals: green-tinted wrist veins, gold jewellery looking better than silver, cream looking better than pure white, and skin that tans rather than burns all point warm. Blue or purple veins, flattering silver, crisp white beating cream, and skin that burns easily point cool. This tool weighs all six together because any single one can mislead.
What is an olive undertone?
Olive is a green-grey cast layered over an otherwise warm-to-neutral base. Olive skin often looks slightly ashen against plain white, turns orange in yellow foundations and grey in pink ones. This tool returns Olive when you report a grey or ashen skin cast and your other signals are not strongly cool.
Is the vein test reliable on its own?
No. Vein colour is affected by skin depth, how close the veins sit to the surface, and the light you check in, so on its own it is a coin toss for many people. It becomes useful when it agrees with the jewellery, white-vs-cream and skin-cast checks — which is why this tool cross-checks six indicators instead of relying on one.
Can my undertone change over time?
Your undertone itself stays constant. What changes is your skin tone with sun exposure, and conditions like rosacea or redness can make a cool undertone read stronger temporarily. Re-run the checks in neutral daylight when your skin is calm and untanned for the most representative result.
Is this reliable for choosing foundation?
It narrows the range considerably and tells you which shade family to try — warm/golden, cool/pink, neutral, or olive-specific — but it does not replace testing on skin. Lighting, how a formula oxidises over the day, and how it interacts with your skin all matter, so swatch two or three shades along the jaw in daylight before buying.
Does this tool store my answers or photos?
No. There is no photo upload, no sign-up and no email step. Every answer and the scoring stay in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere or saved when you close the page.
