How the Screen Time Budget Planner works
- Start with total waking hours, then subtract the screen time that is not optional.
- Set a discretionary budget for what remains, rather than trying to cap everything uniformly.
- Check the off-screen total. That figure is the one that changes how a week feels, and it is the one a per-app limit never shows.
FAQ
Why budget by category rather than total?
Because a total lumps required work screens together with discretionary use, so the number looks alarming and suggests no action. Separating them shows the part you can actually change.
Do app timers work?
Somewhat, and they are easy to dismiss. A budget decided in advance tends to work better than a limit met in the moment, because the decision is made when you are not mid-scroll.
Is less screen time always better?
Not inherently. A video call with family and an hour of doomscrolling are both screen time and are not equivalent. What the time displaces matters more than the total.
