How it works
- Enter your initial investment and its final value.
- Optionally add the holding period in years to see an annualized rate.
- See net gain, total ROI, and annualized ROI update instantly.
The formula
Total ROI = (Final value − Initial investment) ÷ Initial investment × 100
Annualized ROI = ((Final value ÷ Initial investment) ^ (1 ÷ Years) − 1) × 100
Example: $10,000 growing to $14,500 over 3 years is a 45% total ROI, or about 13.2% per year annualized.
FAQ
What's the difference between total ROI and annualized ROI?
Total ROI is the overall percentage gain or loss across the entire holding period, regardless of how long it took. Annualized ROI spreads that same return evenly across each year, which makes returns over different time periods comparable — a 50% gain over 5 years is a much lower annualized return than the same 50% gain in 1 year.
Does this account for fees, taxes, or dividends?
No — it only compares the initial and final values you enter. If you received dividends or paid fees along the way, add or subtract them from the final value yourself first for a more accurate return.
What happens if I leave the holding period blank?
Total ROI and net gain still calculate normally — only the annualized ROI figure needs a holding period, since it needs to know how long the return took.
Can I use this for something other than an investment, like a business expense?
Yes — any pair of "money in" and "money out" values works, whether it's a stock position, a marketing campaign's cost versus revenue, or a home renovation versus resale value.
