How the retirement calculator works
- Enter your age, retirement age, current savings, and planned monthly contribution.
- Set return, contribution-growth, and inflation assumptions that match the scenario you want to explore.
- Review the projected nest egg, its value in today’s money, the source of the balance, and five-year milestones.
- Change one assumption at a time to see how saving more, working longer, or using a different return changes the projection.
The projection method
The calculator converts the expected annual return into an equivalent monthly rate, grows the existing balance for one month, then adds that month’s contribution. Contributions change after each completed year by the annual contribution-growth percentage.
Monthly rate = (1 + annual return)1/12 − 1
Next balance = current balance × (1 + monthly rate) + contribution
Today’s value = projected balance ÷ (1 + inflation)years
This deterministic model is useful for comparing assumptions, not predicting markets. It excludes taxes, fees, contribution limits, pensions, government benefits, and the sequence of good and bad investment years.
FAQ
What does the projected nest egg include?
It includes your current retirement savings, monthly contributions, any annual increase in those contributions, and compounded investment growth through your selected retirement age.
How is the expected annual return applied?
The annual return is converted to an equivalent monthly rate, growth is applied each month, and that month’s contribution is added afterward. The model assumes a smooth return, while real investments rise and fall.
What does “in today’s money” mean?
It discounts the future balance by your inflation assumption to estimate its purchasing power in current currency. This helps separate a large future number from what it may actually buy.
Should I include an employer retirement-plan match?
Yes. Add the amount that actually reaches the account—including a regular employer match—to the monthly contribution. Do not include a match you are not yet eligible to receive.
Does this calculator tell me whether I have enough to retire?
No. It projects savings growth, but a full retirement plan also needs expected spending, taxes, fees, pensions, government benefits, life expectancy, and investment risk. The 4% result is only an illustration.
Are my financial inputs saved or uploaded?
No. The calculation runs in your browser tab, with no account or backend. Refreshing the page resets the example and clears the values you entered.
