FAQ
Why do redirect chains matter?
Each hop costs a request, and search engines follow a limited number before giving up. A chain also loses a little signal at each step. Map every old URL directly to its final destination instead.
What happens to URLs I don't map?
They 404. On a migration that is the single largest cause of lost traffic, because the pages that were ranking are exactly the ones with inbound links pointing at the old address.
301 or 302?
301 for a permanent move, which is what a migration is. A 302 tells search engines the old URL will return, so signals stay with the old address and the new one does not inherit them.
