How to change audio pitch without changing speed
- Choose an audio file or drop it onto the upload area. The browser must be able to decode its format and codec.
- Set the semitone slider or choose a preset. Negative values lower pitch; positive values raise it. Leave cents at 0 unless you need fine tuning.
- Keep Preserve tempo on to retain the original duration in the rendered file. Turn it off to change pitch and playback speed together.
- Use Quick preview for a temporary pitch-and-speed check. Press Apply pitch shift to create the processed WAV with your Preserve tempo setting.
- Compare A Original and B Processed, then select Download WAV. If you change the pitch settings afterward, apply again before downloading the updated result.
Semitones, cents and the pitch ratio
One cent is one hundredth of a semitone. The combined setting determines the frequency multiplier:
total shift = semitones + cents / 100 pitch ratio = 2^(total shift / 12) +12 semitones, 0 cents = 2 times the frequency -12 semitones, 0 cents = 0.5 times the frequency
With Preserve tempo off, output duration is the original duration divided by the pitch ratio. A 60-second clip shifted up 12 semitones becomes about 30 seconds long. With Preserve tempo on, the rendered file retains the original sample count and duration, but processing can introduce audible artifacts.
FAQ
Can I change a song's pitch without changing its tempo?
Yes. Enable Preserve tempo and press Apply pitch shift. The rendered WAV retains the original duration. Quick preview is a temporary pitch-and-speed preview, so use the processed result to judge the tempo-preserved sound.
Can I use this as a song key changer?
Yes, if you know the required interval. For example, lowering D major to C major means -2 semitones with 0 cents. The tool transposes the whole recording; it does not identify the song's key or change only one instrument.
How far can I raise or lower the pitch?
The semitone slider runs from -12 to +12, with a separate -100 to +100 cent adjustment. The two settings add together, so an endpoint with 100 cents in the same direction reaches 13 semitones. Start with a small shift and compare the result before trying an octave.
Why does Quick preview sound faster or slower?
Quick preview changes playback rate and pitch together, even when Preserve tempo is enabled. Press Apply pitch shift and listen to B Processed to hear the rendered version. The separate A/B playback-speed control changes listening speed, not the downloaded WAV.
Which audio formats can I open?
The file picker accepts common audio types such as MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, FLAC and AIFF. Successful decoding depends on the browser and the codec inside the file. If a file fails to decode, try a PCM WAV version. A filename extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Can I download an MP3 after changing pitch?
The current export is 16-bit PCM WAV, not MP3. Apply the shift first, then use Download WAV. You can convert that WAV separately if another output format is needed.
Why does the shifted audio sound metallic or less natural?
The tempo-preserving process combines overlapping audio segments, which can alter transients and vocal character, especially with large shifts. Compare smaller changes first. The tool does not provide formant preservation or automatic vocal tuning.
Does my audio leave my device?
The widget decodes, processes and creates the WAV locally in your browser. It does not upload the selected audio for processing. Long recordings can still require substantial device memory and processing time.
Why does the download still use my previous settings?
Changing the sliders does not rerender an existing export. Press Apply pitch shift again when the page says the settings have changed since the last render, then download the new WAV.
Pitch-shifting examples for music practice
| Goal | Semitones | Preserve tempo |
|---|---|---|
| Lower a song from D major to C major | -2 | On |
| Raise a song from C major to D major | +2 | On |
| Create an octave-up, double-speed effect | +12 | Off |
Use 0 cents for these examples. Set the comparison player's speed to 1Γ when judging the rendered result. This tool shifts the whole recording; it does not detect the original key or isolate vocals.
