The counting method
Reading time uses a practical average silent-reading speed of 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next whole minute.
Reading time = total words ÷ 200 words per minute

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened and analyzed by your browser. Its text and statistics never leave your device.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
A scanned PDF usually contains page images rather than selectable text. This tool can count its pages, but it cannot count words unless the PDF already has an OCR text layer.
How are words counted?
Text is extracted page by page and split at whitespace. Hyphenated text may count differently depending on how the PDF stores its text layer.
Why can the count differ from the original document?
PDFs store positioned text fragments rather than paragraphs. Headers, footers, hidden text, and line-break hyphenation can make the result differ slightly from a word processor.
Can it open password-protected PDFs?
Not without the document password. Remove the password first or use an unlocked copy that your browser can read.
