What each category actually does
Document, eBook, Spreadsheet, and PowerPoint (text dump) all read the PDF's existing text layer and rebuild it as paragraphs — nothing is guessed or re-typed, so accuracy depends on the PDF having real, selectable text to begin with. Spreadsheet and PowerPoint (text dump) go one step further in what they simplify: a PDF has no real table or slide structure, so Excel gets one row per paragraph and PowerPoint gets one slide per page — a plain text dump, not table- or layout-aware extraction. Image formats, and PowerPoint (image dump), instead render each page exactly as it looks, pixel for pixel, which works even on scanned pages that have no text layer at all — GIF additionally reduces each page to 256 colours, which is a limit of the format itself. PDF/A is different again: it doesn't touch the page content at all, it adds what the archival standard requires (an embedded colour profile, conformance metadata) directly to the existing PDF.
FAQ
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened and converted entirely inside your browser tab — nothing is sent to a server. You can go offline once the page has loaded and conversion still works.
Which format should I pick?
Image tab (JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, TIFF, GIF) for a picture of each page — pick this for scanned PDFs too, since it doesn't need a text layer. Document tab (Word, Web page, Text, PDF/A) if you need to edit, reuse, or archive it — Word has two options: Word (editable) rebuilds headings, paragraphs, tables, and images as real Word content, while Word (exact look) puts a picture of each page in the document so tables, diagrams, and images look identical to the PDF but can't be edited. eBook tab (EPUB, FictionBook) if you're loading it into an e-reader. Excel is a plain text dump, not table-aware extraction. Presentation has two options: PowerPoint (text dump) puts each page's text in an editable box, PowerPoint (image dump) puts a picture of the page on each slide instead — pick image dump for scanned PDFs or when the exact layout matters more than editable text.
Why did a Document, eBook, Spreadsheet, or Presentation conversion fail?
Word (editable), Web page, Text, EPUB, FictionBook, Excel, and PowerPoint (text dump) all need a text layer to extract from. A scanned PDF (a photo or scan saved as pages of images) has none, so there's nothing to pull out — use an Image format, Word (exact look), or PowerPoint (image dump), instead. PDF/A fails for a different reason: it needs the source PDF to be unencrypted, since PDF/A doesn't allow password protection.
What does PDF/A actually change, and is it fully certified-compliant?
PDF/A is an archival PDF standard used by courts, libraries, and government agencies for long-term storage. Converting adds an embedded sRGB colour profile and XMP metadata declaring PDF/A-1b conformance, and strips JavaScript. One thing it can't fix: PDF/A also requires every font in the file to be embedded, and this tool can't add missing fonts to a PDF that doesn't already embed them — most PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs, or a browser's Print to PDF already do. For a submission with a hard certified-compliance requirement, verify the result with a dedicated validator (or our own PDF Preflight Validator) before relying on it.
Is the Excel or PowerPoint output a real table or slide layout?
Depends on the option. XLSX and PowerPoint (text dump) both skip real structure — a PDF has no table or slide layout to detect, so XLSX gives you one row per paragraph (Page, Text columns) and PowerPoint (text dump) gives you one slide per page with the page's text in a plain box. PowerPoint (image dump) instead renders each page exactly as it looks and drops that picture onto its own slide — the visual layout is exact, but the slide contents aren't editable text.
What happens with a multi-page PDF?
Word (both options), Web page, Text, EPUB, FictionBook, Excel, and PowerPoint (text dump) combine every page into one file. PDF/A keeps the exact same pages, just adds the archival metadata. JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, TIFF, GIF, and PowerPoint (image dump) give you one image (or slide) per page — for JPG/PNG/WEBP/BMP/TIFF/GIF with two or more pages, the images arrive together in a single .zip so you get one download instead of many.
Is there a page limit or file size limit?
No hard limit — your device does the work, so the practical ceiling is your browser's available memory rather than a quota we impose. Very large scans as PNG or TIFF can be slow; JPG will be faster for those.
Why can't I export WEBP?
A small number of older browsers can't encode WEBP images. If that happens you'll see a message suggesting JPG or PNG instead — both work everywhere.
Why does the GIF look a bit banded or off-colour?
GIF only supports 256 colours per image, so every pixel is mapped onto a fixed 256-colour palette — expected for the format, not a bug. For an exact-colour copy, use PNG or TIFF instead.
Can I convert the other way, into a PDF?

Can I convert more than one PDF at once?
Yes — pick a format first, then add up to 3 PDFs; all of them convert to it. You get a single download if there's only one output overall, or one .zip containing everything if there's more than one (multiple PDFs, or a multi-page PDF exported as separate images).
