How the PDF attachment extractor works
- Choose a PDF file.
- The tool reads the PDF's internal Names/EmbeddedFiles structure to find any attached files.
- Each attachment found is listed with its size and a download button.
The method
PDF's embedded-file feature stores attachments as named entries in the document catalog's Names dictionary, each pointing to a file specification that in turn references the actual file stream. Walking that structure recovers each attachment's name and raw bytes.
FAQ
What counts as an "attachment" in a PDF?
A file embedded inside the PDF as a separate object - spreadsheets, other documents, or datasets attached via the PDF's embedded-file feature - not images or content placed directly on a page.
Why does it say no attachments were found?
Most PDFs don't contain embedded files at all - only ones specifically built to carry attachments (like some invoices with backing data, or CAD/engineering PDFs) will have any.
Does this extract images shown on the page?
No. Images and graphics rendered on a page are part of that page's content stream, not embedded file attachments - this tool only finds files stored in the PDF's attachment structure.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is parsed and its embedded files extracted entirely in your browser using pdf-lib - nothing is sent to a server.
