FAQ
Why is there a time limit at all?
Because oil degrades even when the car sits — moisture and combustion by-products accumulate, and additives deplete. A car doing short local trips is arguably harder on oil than a motorway commuter.
What counts as severe use?
Frequent short trips where the engine never reaches temperature, sustained towing, very dusty environments, and lots of idling. Most manufacturers publish a shortened schedule for these conditions.
Are extended intervals safe?
When the manufacturer specifies them along with a particular oil specification, yes — the two go together. Running an extended interval on an oil that does not meet the required spec is where problems appear.
