How the Noise Gate Tool works
- Measure the noise floor during silence and the speech level during normal talking.
- Set the threshold above the noise but well below the quietest speech — the gap between them is your working room.
- Lengthen hold and release until word endings stop being clipped, which is the usual complaint after gating.
The method
A gate passes audio above a threshold and attenuates below it. The timing controls decide how quickly it opens and how long it stays open after the signal drops.

FAQ
Why does gating cut off the ends of words?
Because release is too short. Trailing consonants and breath tails fall below the threshold before the phrase is really over. Lengthen hold and release rather than lowering the threshold.
What is chatter?
The gate opening and closing rapidly when the signal hovers around the threshold. Hysteresis — a lower close threshold than open threshold — and a longer hold both fix it.
Is a gate better than noise reduction?
They solve different problems. A gate silences the gaps and does nothing during speech; noise reduction removes noise throughout but can introduce artefacts. For a room hum under a voice, doing both gently beats either aggressively.
