How Material Wastage Calculator works

  1. Choose the material type — the wastage slider automatically fills in a typical allowance for that material.
  2. Enter the exact quantity your project needs, measured in the material's usual unit.
  3. Adjust the wastage percentage if your job has more cuts, a trickier layout, or a less experienced crew than average.
  4. Read off the extra amount to buy and the total order quantity, updated live as you change any value.

The formula

The extra amount is the exact quantity multiplied by the wastage percentage, and the total order quantity adds that extra on top:

order quantity = quantity × (1 + wastage%)

Example: 500 sq ft of tile at the default 10% wastage needs 500 × 1.10 = 550 sq ft ordered — 50 sq ft of allowance for cuts, breakage, and pattern-matching offcuts.

FAQ

Where do the default wastage percentages come from?

They are typical trade allowances: about 10% for tile and drywall, 15% for timber (cutting to length loses more), 5% for paint and brick, and 10% for carpet. They are starting points, not guarantees — a complex layout, a diagonal pattern, or an inexperienced installer can push actual waste higher.

Should I round the result up?

Yes, in practice. The calculator shows the exact decimal total, but most materials are sold in whole units (a sheet of drywall, a gallon of paint, a box of tile) — round the total order quantity up to the next full unit or box before ordering.

Can I set a wastage percentage that is not one of the defaults?

Yes. Selecting a material fills in its typical percentage, but the slider below it is fully editable — drag it to any value from 0% to 40% to match your own job, and the totals update immediately.
