The formula
Margin is profit expressed as a share of the selling price, not the cost — that’s the detail that trips people up when pricing a product. To find a selling price that hits a target margin, divide cost by one minus the margin:
selling price = cost ÷ (1 − margin)
Example: a $40 cost with a 35% target margin gives 40 ÷ (1 − 0.35) = 40 ÷ 0.65 = $61.54. Profit per unit is $21.54, which works out to a 53.8% markup on cost.
FAQ
What’s the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of the cost price. A 35% margin and a 35% markup on the same cost give different selling prices — this calculator shows both.
Why can’t margin be 100% or more?
Margin is profit divided by selling price, so it can only approach 100% as cost approaches zero — it can never reach or exceed it for a positive cost. This calculator caps margin at 99.99% for that reason.
Does this include taxes or fees?
No. This is a simple cost-and-margin calculation. For a price that also covers sales tax, payment processing fees, or shipping, add those costs into the cost price first.
