What this scale means
Example shown — 4 cm on a 1 : 50,000 map. Change any value to try your own.
How to convert a map scale
- Choose what you want to work out: ground distance from a map measurement, map distance from a ground distance, an unknown scale from two measurements, or a ground area from a map area.
- Enter the map scale (or pick a common one such as 1 : 50,000), then the measurement and its unit.
- Read the result and the plain-language equivalents underneath, such as what 1 cm or 1 inch on the map represents on the ground.
The formula
A scale of 1 : N means one unit on the map represents N of the same unit on the ground, so distances convert with a single multiplication:
ground distance = map distance × N map distance = ground distance ÷ N N = ground distance ÷ map distance ground area = map area × N²
Example: on a 1 : 50,000 map, 4 cm × 50,000 = 200,000 cm = 2 km on the ground. Areas grow with the square of the ratio, so 10 cm² on that map is 10 × 50,000² cm² = 2.5 km². Units are converted through metres using exact definitions (1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 mi = 1,609.344 m, 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m).
FAQ
What does a scale of 1:50,000 mean?
One unit on the map equals 50,000 of the same unit on the ground. So 1 cm on the map is 50,000 cm, which is 500 m or 0.5 km in the real world.
How do I convert map distance to real distance?
Multiply the distance you measured on the map by the scale denominator, then convert the units. For example, 4 cm on a 1:25,000 map is 4 × 25,000 = 100,000 cm, which is 1 km.
How do I find the scale of a map when it isn't printed on it?
Measure a distance on the map and look up or estimate the same distance on the ground, then choose "Unknown scale from two measurements". The tool divides the ground distance by the map distance to give the ratio, such as 1 : 50,000.
Why is a large scale number a small-scale map?
A map at 1 : 1,000,000 covers a large area with little detail, so it is called small-scale; 1 : 10,000 shows a small area in detail and is large-scale. The bigger the number after the colon, the less detail per unit of paper.
How do I convert map area to real area?
Square the scale denominator and multiply it by the map area. At 1 : 50,000, every 1 cm² on the map represents 50,000² cm² on the ground, which is 0.25 km². Use the "Ground area from a map area" option to do this for you.
Does the tool upload my measurements?
No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Gera Tools and Omni Calculator are both solid; Omni Calculator also covers volume and architectural scales, which this tool leaves out on purpose. Choose Online Tool Store when you want all four map-scale calculations in one plain form with plain-language equivalents and nothing to install.
