What is an M4R file?
M4R is the file format Apple uses for custom iPhone ringtones — technically it's the same AAC-in-MP4 container as an M4A audio file, just renamed with a .m4r extension so iOS recognizes it as a ringtone rather than a regular song.
How do I actually get this onto my iPhone?
This tool creates the .m4r file, but getting it onto your phone still needs one more step — either drag it into GarageBand's ringtone project and sync, or add it to your Mac's Music/iTunes library and sync your iPhone over a cable, then set it under Settings > Sounds > Ringtone.
Why is there a 40-second limit?
