High-Protein Feed A (Soybean)

Energy Grain B (Corn)

Pearson Square Balance Ratio

How it works

  1. Select the target animal species (e.g. Broiler starter, Beef cattle, Dairy, or Grower pig) or specify a custom target Crude Protein percentage (CP %).
  2. Choose your high-protein supplement feed (e.g., Soybean meal 44%, Fish meal 60%, Canola meal 36%).
  3. Choose your energy grain base (e.g., Cracked corn 9%, Barley 11%, Oats 12%).
  4. Enter total batch mix weight (in kg, lbs, or tonnes) to calculate exact component weights and blend percentages.

The formula

Parts Feed A = |Target CP − CP of Feed B|

Parts Feed B = |CP of Feed A − Target CP|

Feed A Weight = (Parts A / Total Parts) × Total Batch Weight

FAQ

What is the Pearson Square method for feed balancing?

The Pearson Square is a proven agricultural balancing method used to calculate the exact proportions of two feed ingredients needed to create a mixture with a desired target nutrient concentration (most commonly Crude Protein % or Total Digestible Nutrients %).

What Crude Protein percentage do different livestock animals require?

Typical dietary CP requirements are: 16% to 20% for poultry broiler starters, 14% to 16% for grower pigs, 12% to 14% for finishing beef cattle, and 14% to 18% for high-yielding lactating dairy cows.

Can the Pearson Square balance three or more ingredients?

A single Pearson Square balances two feed sources (or two pre-blended premixes). To balance multiple ingredients simultaneously, feeds are grouped into protein supplements and energy grain bases, or solved with linear programming.

Why must the target CP fall between the two feed ingredients?

Mathematically, you cannot blend two ingredients to produce a crude protein concentration higher than the richest ingredient or lower than the poorest ingredient.
