Home Project Estimator

Rough materials cost and labor time for common home projects, from typical published rate ranges.

Typical U.S. DIY cost-guide ranges — always confirm current local pricing before budgeting a real project.

How it works

Each project type has a typical materials-cost-per-square-foot range and a labor-hours-per-square-foot rate, drawn from common home improvement cost guides:

materials cost = area × cost-per-sqft range
labor hours = area × hours-per-sqft
labor cost (if hiring) = labor hours × your hourly rate
  1. Pick the project type closest to what you're planning.
  2. Enter the area in square feet.
  3. Optionally check "Hiring a pro" and set an hourly rate to see the labor cost added on top of materials.

FAQ

How accurate are these cost estimates?

They're a planning starting point, built from typical published DIY cost-guide ranges per project type — not a quote. Real pricing depends on your region, material grade, and project-specific complexity, so treat the range as "roughly what to budget for," not a final number.

Which project types are covered?

Painting a room, installing laminate flooring, retiling a floor, installing drywall, and building a small deck — each with its own typical materials cost per square foot and labor-hour rate.

What happens if I check "Hiring a pro"?

The estimate adds a labor cost on top of materials, calculated as the estimated labor hours for your project times the hourly rate you enter — so you can compare a DIY budget against a hired-out one.

Is my project data uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
