How it works

  1. Select your desired world biome theme (Archipelago, Pangea, Desert, or Arctic Tundra).
  2. Choose the map grid dimensions (Compact 10x7, Standard 14x9, or Large 18x12).
  3. Click "🎲 New Map" to procedurally generate a randomized terrain topography with coordinate labels and points of interest.
  4. Hover over individual hexes to inspect biome types and movement point (MP) travel costs, and export the vector SVG map.

FAQ

Why are hexagonal grids preferred over square grids in wargaming and RPGs?

Hexagonal grids eliminate the diagonal movement distance distortion inherent to square grids (where diagonals are ~1.414x longer than orthogonal steps). In a hex grid, all six adjacent neighboring tiles are equidistant from the center.

What types of biomes and points of interest (POIs) are generated?

The generator procedurally constructs diverse biomes including Deep Oceans, Coastal Waters, Plains, Ancient Forests, Rolling Hills, Desert Dunes, Frozen Tundra, and Mountain Peaks, alongside random Points of Interest such as Castles, Fortified Towns, and Dungeon Ruins.

Can generated maps be exported for printing or Virtual Tabletops (VTT)?

Yes! You can export the high-resolution vector SVG directly to print hex-crawl battlemaps or import them into virtual tabletop software like Roll20 or Foundry VTT.

How do hex coordinates work?

Hexes are labeled with alphanumeric coordinates (e.g. A1, B4, F8) allowing Dungeon Masters and players to track campaign party movement, random encounter tables, and exploration fog-of-war.
