The method
Total yield is area times yield per hectare, converted to bales by average bale weight at the baling moisture.
bales = (area x yield per ha x 1000) / bale weight in kg
Bale weight varies with density settings and moisture, so an actual weighed bale from your own baler beats any table figure.

Why does moisture matter?
Because it affects both weight and safety. Hay baled above roughly 20% moisture can heat as it ferments, spoiling the crop and, in stacked bales, occasionally causing fires. Weight sold wet is also weight the buyer is not getting as hay.
How much does a bale weigh?
It varies widely with format, density setting, crop and moisture. A 5 ft round bale might be 400 to 600 kg. Weighing a few of your own bales gives a figure worth far more than any published average.
How accurate is a yield estimate?
It depends entirely on the yield per hectare assumption, which varies with sward, season, fertility and cut number. Use your own field history rather than a regional average where you have it.
