Budget plan
18,000 a week split: fresh produce 5,400, protein 4,500, staples 3,600, dairy 2,200, household 1,500, treats 800. Last month's actual overran on protein by 12%.
How the Grocery Budget Planner works
- Set the total you want to spend and split it by category rather than as one number.
- Track actual spend against the plan for a few weeks before adjusting.
- Look for the category that consistently overruns — that is where the plan is unrealistic, not where you lack discipline.
FAQ
Why budget by category?
Because a single total tells you that you overspent and nothing about where. Categories turn a vague sense of overspending into a specific decision about protein, or convenience food, or the weekly treat.
What is a realistic food budget?
It varies enormously with location, dietary requirements and household. Your own past few months of actual spending is a far better baseline than any published average.
Why does my spend always exceed the plan?
Usually because the plan was set aspirationally rather than from actual data. A budget built from three months of real spending, minus a modest reduction, holds far better than one built from what feels reasonable.

Grocery Budget Planner compares planned against actual by category, because the total alone never tells you which decision to change.
