How it works
- Enter the weight of your gold item and choose your unit (Grams, Troy Ounces, Sovereign/Pavan, Tola, or Kilograms).
- Select the Karat purity of the piece (such as 22K for traditional jewelry or 24K for bullion bars).
- Enter the current 24K benchmark gold spot price per gram or per troy ounce.

The formula
The raw intrinsic value is calculated by finding the pure 24K gold mass and multiplying by the unit price:
Pure Gold Content (grams) = Gross Weight in grams × (Karat / 24)
Base Melt Value = Pure Gold Content × 24K Price per gram
Making Charges = Base Melt Value × (Making Charge % / 100)
Total Estimated Value = (Base Melt Value + Making Charges) × (1 + Tax % / 100)
Example: A 16g 22K necklace (16 × 22/24 = 14.667g pure gold) at $78.50/g has a melt value of $1,151.33. With 8% making charges ($92.11), the total piece value is $1,243.44.

How is the purity of gold determined by Karat?
Karat measures the ratio of pure gold to other alloy metals out of 24 parts. 24K is 99.9% pure gold (24/24), 22K is 91.67% pure gold (22/24), 18K is 75% pure gold (18/24), and 14K is 58.33% pure gold (14/24).
What is the difference between Melt / Scrap value and retail jewelry price?
The melt or scrap value is the intrinsic value of the raw pure gold contained within the item if melted down. The retail jewelry price includes additional costs such as artisan making charges, wastage fees, hallmark certification, retailer profit margins, and sales taxes.
What is a Troy Ounce (oz t)?
Precious metals are weighed in Troy Ounces rather than standard avoirdupois ounces. One Troy Ounce equals approximately 31.1035 grams, compared to a standard kitchen ounce which is approximately 28.3495 grams.
How do making charges affect the final gold value?
Making charges represent crafting, stone-setting, polishing, and designer labor costs. When selling scrap or secondhand gold, buyers usually pay only the melt value of the fine gold and do not reimburse original making charges.
