How the Formwork Area Calculator works

The method
Formwork is measured by contact area — the surface actually against the concrete — not by the volume of concrete poured.
a beam's formwork = 2 × (depth × length) + (width × length) for the soffit
A deep narrow beam has far more formwork per cubic metre of concrete than a slab, which is why beam-heavy designs cost more to form than the concrete volume suggests.
FAQ
Why measure contact area rather than concrete volume?
Because formwork cost tracks the surface being formed, not the concrete behind it. A thin wall and a thick wall of the same height need the same formwork and very different volumes of concrete.
Do reuse cycles matter to the estimate?
Substantially. Panel cost divided over ten uses is a very different rate from one use, and the realistic number of reuses depends on the system, the finish required, and site handling.
What about the top of a slab?
Not formed, so not counted. Only surfaces the concrete is cast against are contact area — which is why a slab counts its soffit and edges but not its finished top.
