FAQ
What is an orphaned footnote?
A marker in the text with no corresponding note, or a note with no marker pointing at it. Both happen constantly when paragraphs get moved during revision, and both survive a spellcheck untouched.
Footnotes or endnotes?
Footnotes suit notes a reader should see immediately — a translation, a clarification. Endnotes suit dense citation that would swamp the page. Many publishers have a house rule that decides it for you.
Do symbols still get used?
In documents with very few notes, and in some journals. The traditional sequence is asterisk, dagger, double dagger, and it stops being practical past about four notes per page.
